I have been keeping my lawyer-written will in Microsoft Word for over two decades and printing it out as changes are needed, but this year my wife and I decided to make some changes and I wanted something more in-depth. This program is very easy and it walks you through the process much like a tax program walks you through the tax question process. I do not have a particularly complicated estate, so the walk-through was pretty easy. I went through it several times, changing things slightly each time to try to get it closer to what I wanted. There were a few areas in the printed document that I would have liked to change, though. For example, if you have children, any common trust you set up expires for all children at the same time. (Yes, you can set up individual trusts and name the same trustee, but that seems overly complicated for the trustee.) And trusts dissolve at a certain age no matter what, so if you have handicapped children that will need lifetime care, you will need to look elsewhere. The program is DESIGNED for you to have to update it annually, or at least regularly, which is par for the course for Quicken, a company that seems to do everything they can to turn their applications into ways to sell you something else. You cannot, for example, define a process differently depending on whether any of your children are no longer minors or have reached a certain age. In the case of naming a child as executor, for example, you would have to list the oldest child as a second or third choice executor and depend on the first executor choices to decline to do it. There is also no separate provision or document for instructions or preferences. For example, you can define executors for the estate and trustees for any trust you create for your children, but there is no mention of guardianship (so you can't say who you would prefer your kids to go to) and no provision that says your kids can keep the cars you bought for them. I get the impression Quicken believes those types of things have the potential to void the will. I think there should at least be a separate document that allows you to state your preferences.
